June 3, 2014 Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students, During this last week of school, we are still following school rules and procedures. We continue to learn, study, and play everyday of the school year, as we do everyday of our lives. There will be a few activities over the next few days, but these activities are privileges. We earned a free lunch from Chick-Fil-A because we turned in the most reading minutes in the whole school! We get our free lunch at 11:45 on June 5. We will have our class auction and Market Day that afternoon! Students may bring things to sell that they make or buy. The total cost in US Dollars must not be more than $5.00. I prefer that students use money they have earned or do extra jobs for you, in order to earn any money you spend helping them with this activity. Earning the money spent gives students self-esteem and confidence. Students do not need to bring anything to sell. They can participate fully by working for another business or being a consumer. June 6 is Field Day and the last day of this school year. Please encourage students to read and practice math this summer. Extra credit and treats will be given to students who prove that they did, and to students who improve reading levels at the beginning of next year. Last Progress Report

May 13, 2014 Dear Parents, This year has gone by so fast. It must be because I have had so much fun teaching your children. I signed your student up for Scholastic’s Summer Reading Program. Scholastic is trying to set a world record for reading. I gave students their sign in and password today. The school with the highest participation will earn prizes. Students can earn prizes for their reading also. For more information visit http://www.scholastic.com/ups/campaigns/src-2014/kids The public library has a reading program as well. Students can log their reading in both places. (Double the credit/ double the prizes for the same effort!) This will be the last progress report this year. As usual you may check student’s progress/grades on Skyward. We still have several major assignments that will be entered when students have finished them. I will take late work until Tuesday, May 20, and redo-assignments until Friday May 23, for anything due before May 16. I sent home the Unit 5 Math test today. Students did an awesome job! It looks like I might be bring them brownies soon. (One absent student needs to finish the test so we can compute our final class average.) Homework today: Students need to show you the Order of Operations using words and gestures! (Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiply - Divide from left to right, Add - Subtract from Left to Right)

March 21 Note Home

March 21, 2014 Dear Parents, We earned Nachos! Students who earned a 27, 28, 29, or a 30, out of 30 possible points, on their Utah Write essay last term, get to choose a topping for the corn chips. Any donations of cheese, bean dip, salsa, or other appropriate topping is appreciated. We will be enjoying this reward Tuesday after our SAGE Writing test. Students have an opportunity to earn ice cream with toppings by getting scores in the same range on the “Save the Ice” essay on Utah Write. I am confident they will earn this reward also, so if you would like to donate ice cream or toppings I will let you know when we have earned it. Our SAGE writing test is 10:30 Monday and Tuesday mornings. We have awesome writers in our class. I am confident students can write well no matter what prompt they give us. Please encourage them to get a good nights sleep, eat well, elaborate, and do their best. :) Some writing tips to remind them about: Restate the question at the beginning of the essay Hook the reader with something interesting them to read OREO O: state your opinion R: give a reason E: support your reason with at least one E Explain Example Expert Evidence ELABORATE O: we Ought to ….. this is your CALL to ACTION A strong conclusion can include restating your opinion and your call to action Thanks for having great kids in my class! February 27, 2014 Dear Parents and Students, We moved our Direct Writing Assessment (DWA) to March 10th because March 6th is a short day. There is no school for students on March 7 or March 14. We will have a market day on March 13th. Report cards will come home either March 9th or 10th. Parent/Teacher/Student conferences will be on March 11 and 12th. February 13, 2014 Dear Parents, This will be the last progress report before report cards are sent home on March 10 or 11. The last day to turn in late/missing/ absent work is February 21. The end of this school year is approaching quickly. There are a few dates that I want to share with you. I will let you know of any others as I am informed. The DWA is March 6. Students will type a persuasive/ opinion essay from start to finish on that day. They will get the prompt/ topic that morning. It will be much easier for them to do their best writing if they are comfortable typing. Student’s nightly assignment is 10 minutes on Typing Pal. I have a book of typing practice lessons for students, who do not have access to the Internet, to check out. Daily typing practice helps build muscle memory. Some 5th grade students this year can touch-type faster than the grade level goal of 25 words per minute. Touch-typing is a Life Skill that students can become proficient at this age if they practice daily. All end of year testing will be on the computer also. You can take a look at the new end of the year testing at SagePortal.org Click on the icon of the bike with training wheels, and sign in as guest. The new test is vastly different. Looking at this sample with your student will help him or her feel more comfortable, confident, and ease any fears. We will be practicing with it at school as well. Our ALEKS subscriptions will expire on February 15. If you are interested in renewing your child’s account, I will be happy to proctor it for you through the summer and into next year. A 12-month subscription is $45 with my teacher discount. Seven-month subscription is $31.25. You will pay that directly to ALEKS and your student will continue seamlessly with their personalized math study. I have my own daughter in this program, as it covers college level material as well, and I think it is a useful tool. An We have not earned enough points to have a market day on Friday; however we will be jump roping and hula hooping to exercise our hearts this Friday morning. Students who bring a treat or a Valentine for the whole class will be allowed to pass them out that day. We have 22 people in our class currently. I focus on friendship and teamwork on this day, and throughout the year. We will be doing a social studies project later this year that students can use their creativity on the model for that project. The social studies research project choices are attached so students can start choosing a project. Regards, B.
